Women
Nepalese women suffer from some of the lowest literacy levels and highest maternal mortality rates in the world.
Below are some very depressing statistics about women in Nepal provided by the Asian Development Bank:
- Just 2 in 10 women can read and write in Nepal
- Women are 100 times as likely to die in child birth compared to the UK
- Only 1 in 10 women use family planning
- 1 in 4 girls are involved in child labour
- Just 1 in 4 pregnant women have antenatal care
In the following graph we can see that whilst Nepalese boys are more literate than those in Ethiopia and Bangladesh, Nepalese girls are the most uneducated:

Himalayan Learning aims to support girls and women to break out of the cycle of poverty and the related gender discrimination. That's why 2 out of every 3 children that we help are girls, and why the majority of our other non-sponsorship programmes are set up to develop Nepal through women.
