What they get

For just £25 a year your donation will help one child and their community to get the education that they need to survive in terrible conditions.

We will use the donation in a number of ways depending on the situation of the child, their family, and their community. The following list highlights some of the many ways your donation helps.

Because Himalayan Learning works within the community, we are able to prioritise needs and use your money in the best ways at local prices. We aim to be flexible in how we help each child and community so that we don't prescribe what they need - we listen to them.

The following pie chart illustrates how your donation is divided up:

breakdown of sponsorship

School Fees
Whilst the government states that education at primary level is free, most schools charge money because the government does not provide enough budget to hire teachers.

School Uniform and Footwear
We train local women to make uniforms for our children, creating sustainable local industry. Each child gets shirt and trousers/skirt and also a pair of shoes or sandals depending on the local conditions.

School Books and Stationary
We provide books, pencils, pens, ink, erasers, sharpeners, geometry sets etc for each child to get the best out of their education.

School Bag
In 2006 we launched a project to re-energise local women's home industries asking them to make handmade bags for each child in a traditional style. These bags may cost 50% more than cheap Chinese ones, but they encourage local women and local handicrafts, and last 5 times longer!

Underwear and Female Hygiene Support *NEW
Children in Nepal do not normally wear underwear because of the cost. We decided in 2007 that children, and girls especially, need underwear, especially as they hit puberty. We also add to this support for menstruation as a response to local children who were listing these problems high on their list of non-attendance (there are usually no toilets in schools).

Extreme Weather Kit*NEW
Depending on the circumstances of the village where the child is, we will either provide equipment related to the monsoon weather, or to the cold weather, this can include coats, sweaters, or umbrellas and waterproofs.

Health Kit *NEW
This is some basic health services for the child, provided by local healthcare that we supply to each school.

Dental Kit
One problem all children face in Nepal is regarding their teeth. With this kit, we will make sure that children keep good care of their mouths.

Graduation Fund *NEW
Each year a small amount of your donation adds to a fund for your child so that when it finishes school, we can provide additional support to help them find employment, do vocational training, or start small businesses.

School Fund *NEW
Each year a small amount of your donation adds to a fund that will supply schools with necessary items so that all children can succeed. Examples of which could be blackboards or educational materials.

Community Fund *NEW
Each year a small amount of your donation adds to a fund that will support communities in projects that help the children to study better in some way, such as building a village well.

Health Fund *NEW
Each year a small amount of your donation adds to our own kind of medical "insurance" fund for all our children, so that whichever child becomes sick, we can support them in getting healthy.

Personal Login Section
A personal login section is an area on the website where you can login to see your own details, and all the photos and details of your children, as well as extras benefits such as photos and details about their schools.

Letters for You! *NEW
And finally, we will deliver letters to you from your child so that you can keep in contact with them, learn from them, and understand them.

Please note that we have had to raise the annual sponsorship from £20 in 2008 to £25 in 2009. This is because of the credit crunch and the depreciation of the pound
