Life in the Himalaya
The geography of the Himalayan region also has a major effect on local people and their day to day lives.
Life in Nepal is regulated and effected by geographical constraints. Right from birth the mountainous terrain changes lives - there are few roads, travel is difficult, communication is poor, flooding and erosion is regular, soil and crop quality is bad.
Indeed according to the Mountain Partnership people who live in the mountains not only have one of the physically hardest lives, they are also generally much poorer than those in flatter lands.
The honest and hard working nature of the Nepalese people who live in the Himalaya is famous around the world, both for their strength as in the case of the Gurkhas, and also their stamina and helpfulness in the case of the Sherpas.
